Standpoint Gallery Information

Standpoint Gallery is the leading artist-run gallery and project space in Hoxton/Shoreditch. We do not represent artists. We curate shows from submission and invitation, 7 shows per year, concentrating on emerging/mid-career artists from the UK and internationally. All projects are developed in collaboration with selected artists and aim to provide a platform for innovative new work and ideas, and rich cultural exchange.  Standpoint is a recognised centre of excellence for artist-led activity and debate - our programme of public exhibitions, talks and discussions aims to promote diverse experimentation and analysis in all areas of contemporary practice.

The gallery is core-funded through Standpoint Studios, a registered charity comprising 5 large studios providing creative workspace for 10-15 established artists and makers with diverse specialist knowledge and contacts with leading museums and galleries.

The gallery runs the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, a yearly award which offers a total of £10,000 and a solo show to an exceptional emerging sculptor from the Greater London area. Recent winners are Paul Carter, Clara Clark and John Summers, and guest selectors include Rachel Whiteread, Cornelia Parker and Phyllida Barlow.

Our visual art development residencies – Standpoint Futures – offer intensive input to the practice and career of talented emerging/mid career artists from across the UK.

Core Aims

Standpoint Education

The resident artists at Standpoint Studios have a long-term commitment to the local community and have been successfully running educational projects for more than ten years. We see art and education as inextricably linked, and are committed to providing high quality, flexible educational programmes to meet the demands of a culturally diverse community. Our targeted workshop projects have involved painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, printmaking, photography, film, animation, conservation and ceramics. Standpoint works with local schools and colleges, youth clubs, special needs and community groups, as well as the general public. We have an active programme of gallery talks and debates.  In addition, we provide schools work experience through gallery internships and the Trident and other work placement programmes.
