Gathering in the May

new sculptures by Cathy Ward & Eric Wright

May 2nd - 30th 2003

Cathy Ward & Eric Wright are a collaborative duo who have over the past 5 years created installations of staged metaphorical woods through which they explore threads of European folk culture and tradition, from original forms through to their mutated, kitsch, contemporary manifestations.

Opening on Mayday and running throughout the month, Gathering in the May was a site specific installation that is based on a reinvention of the Maypole, integrating elements from the European Mayday celebration and associated traditional rites.

The sculptures, which are composed from collected paraphenalia and feature over 2 miles of ribbon, embrace mock Tudor styles and invoke traditional festival mayhem. But revellers beware, as the frivolous facade belies its dark heart. The opening night, Mayday, featured a guest appearance from performance artist Andrew Bailey. His unique personification of the 'Green Man' was an act that personified the 'unexpected'. Bailey also provided a specially commissioned audio work for Gathering in the May, that was played throughout the exhibition.

Ward & Wright's recent exhibitions include: 'Transromantik', RBS Gallery, London (2002) 'Volkgeist' Mercer Union, Toronto ON, Canada (2002) Transromantik - the 'Bertesgaden Effect', The Chamber of Pop Culture, The Horse Hospital, London (2000)
